National Farmers Market Week is an annual celebration of farmers markets proclaimed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and coordinated by the Farmers Market Coalition (FMC), a membership-based nonprofit organization that supports farmers markets nationwide through training, technical assistance, and network-building. Each year, FMC’s National Farmers Market Week Campaign highlights the vital role farmers markets play within our nation’s local food systems.

For more than fifty years, farmers markets have influenced how Americans eat, shop, and connect to their food, their farmers, and one another. Farmers markets are more than marketplaces; they are places where neighbors learn, grow, and work together. Further, markets are hubs for connection and collective action around shared values, which can contribute to a more fair and sustainable food system.

The North Carolina Farmers Market Network (NCFMN) began in 2021 with the mission of working “with and for farmers market communities to create a thriving network of marketplaces for local food and farm products through education, innovative services, programs and partnerships, including providing resources to support historically underserved populations.” Since its inception, NCFMN has worked hard to develop resources, training, and networking opportunities for its 50+ member markets, transforming the local food scene.

“Simply put, we are committed to Farmers Markets in North Carolina and the people who power them. National Farmers Market Week gives us all an opportunity to celebrate not only markets and their vendors but also to show appreciation to the unsung hero: the market managers themselves – because markets don’t just happen.”– Nora Rodli, NCFMN Program Coordinator

NC State Extension’s Local Food Program, a longstanding champion of NC’s more than 200 farmers markets, is also celebrating National Farmers Market Week by working to improve its informational webpage about farmers markets. Updates will streamline information and make it more accessible for users. In addition, the Local Food Program and NCFMN collaborated to develop the 2022 Farmers Market Census, which has valuable information about the state of NC’s farmers markets.

“Across the country, farmers markets are defining their role in our communities,” said Willa Sheikh, Executive Director of the Farmers Market Coalition. “Markets are designed in partnership with the people they serve and are a place where market operators, farmers, shoppers, and neighbors can collaborate to meet the evolving needs of their community. As we look to the future, farmers markets will play a key part, as they always have, in leading efforts to adapt, respond, innovate, and advocate for our local food systems. National Farmers Market Week is a chance to celebrate all the ways farmers markets show up for us!”

This National Farmers Market Week, consider visiting or donating to your local market or the North Carolina Farmers Market Network to help strengthen our local food networks. Farmers markets across North Carolina will celebrate with special events and promotions from August 4 to 10, 2024. You can find your local market on the Visit NC Farms App or through your local Extension office.
